Stuff and Things!

Not the most inspired of titles, I agree.

I thought I’d run a little poll for people who read this (including those I pimp it out to, ha). The poll is as follows:

What would you like to see more of on this blog? More history stuff? More old screenshots? Silly things? Mission guides? I’m up for any and all suggestions. I can’t promise to go with any of the suggestions you give, but I can promise to consider them all.

As an extra incentive, I’ll also be giving away a free ship to anyone that takes part between now and the 31st (October 2010, in case anyone is reading his in the future). It’ll be a random ship of my choice, but the value of the ship in question will vary depending on the completeness of your suggestion. For example: “moar history” vs a long paragraph on why you like the history posts might equate to a frigate vs say, a battlecruiser.

I’m going to carry on doing my thing regardless, in case anyone’s worried about the future of this blog. I’d just like some input on what people reading it enjoy and why. So hit me!

In the meantime, have a Megathron:

A Megathron

Yes, once again, the elusive pancake on its head is nowhere to be found.

Please give your character name in the comment so I can contract you a ship. Otherwise, I’ll assume you don’t want a free gift. 😛

Edit: Also, only one ship per commenter. Try not to exploit this. 😛

Oh I can’t read, I just look at the pics! But seriously, you should interview some more people / corps / alliances that are Minmatar related.Silly things and pics also get my vote!Fake edit: waaahh, no pancake on its head!

Moar silly things would get my vote. New Eden is full of humor, usually at the expense of someone else. Perhaps a look at the misfortune of others. With pictures of course, everything looks better with pictures. Why? Well, at times our fellow pilots take themselves a little too seriously. I often hear discussions about why to pick this module over that one, but never what colour it should be.
Edit: Oops, no character name. I guess I’ll do without the gift 🙂

    • 21st Oct '10 at 10:13 am

      Thank you! 🙂

If you edit to say you forgot your character name, I’m going to assume you don’t want people to know. I had no luck when taking a brief look at your blog.

However, if you do, just reply to this comment and I’ll sort you out.

Talk about what you think about the game, things you like and that make it fun.
Talk about where you want the game to go in future.
Tell us what you do, and show us how to do it too.

Some of my favourite blog posts are posts where the blogger thinks about what makes EVE … EVE. What makes it special and how we can make it more so.

Also – more cool pics, please!

I think the most helpful thing about Eve and the Internet is guides. I would love to see some details on specific tactics for ship types and fleet types ( preferably nothing bigger than small gang as we can all overwhelm someone without a lot of tactful play). A guide to colonizing a WH would be cool too. What to expect and what to bring would be invaluable info for new WH’ers. I realize that guides and Eve are very common and some are much better than others. The catch, in the many I have seen around, is many guides provide a general overview of their target. This is not the fault of the author, but a credit to the incredible diversity in Eve. My challenge to you is a series of DETAILED guides for different actions and professions in Eve. If you want to do a manufacturing guide, you’ll have to explain how to take ALL the associated costs into account and why. PvP guide you say. Well, start talking about fittings and why you chose them. From there, discuss target selection and then proper entry techniques given your setup. You can see where I am going with this at this point. Personally, mark me down for a guide covering all aspects of plex’s. Hope to see some of these as I am not a writer, but still believe they would be invaluable to Eve when properly completed.

    • 21st Oct '10 at 10:19 am

Lots of guides. I can play with that. There’s a whole lot in Eve that doesn’t take my fancy, but I can tinker with some ideas you’ve provided here at least. Thank you for the feedback.

A beginners-advance guide to WH’s would be awesome, mission guides are always good, espically if the authoer uses a little flare, rather than just a boring step by step guide. Tales of thngs that get your blood pumping are always fun to read too.

    • 21st Oct '10 at 10:22 am

My exploration of wormholes is a lot more limited than I would like. I have a character training up for it right now though, so its something I can do in the future perhaps. Mission guides that aren’t boring could be a challenge!

    Hi!

Why don’t you start to discuss more of that which concerns us all: EVE Online development and software related stuff? E.g. I’d love to hear your opinion on the upcoming Incursion expansion, what do you think about PI, FW, the GUI of EVE? I personally love to read what other ppl think about the game mechanics themselves, what they (dis)like and what could be improved.
We already have enough blogs covering almost every aspect from guides over to ‘whom I killed last weekend’ and ‘EVE sux’ stuff – so why not mixing EVE ingame topics about your character with some OOG things?
    Thanks bye 🙂

    • 21st Oct '10 at 10:25 am

Sure, I can do opinion pieces. I’m sure I’ve done a couple here and there before.

I read your blog, (among a few others) simply because I can’t get enough EVE in my life with all the tedious commitments of RL constantly vying for my attention. Also, as much as I like the art on your site and do enjoy it when reading at home, I mostly stick around for the text since directing your RSS feed at my MS Outlook means it appears as though I’m checking important emails when really I’m just reading about something silly you’re up to out in the black. This brings me to what I want more of: accounts of what you’re currently doing in EVE. Simple. I don’t care how mundane they seem. As long as you’re undocked it is probably more thrilling than whatever I happen to be doing at work at that minute. And this way, even though I don’t get to play with/shoot at/ransom other people’s internet spaceships as much as I’d like, I can live my EVE life vicariously *through* you and feel like I still play as much as I used to.

    Thanks for keeping me entertained!

Aww, thank you. Well, right now I am docked sadly, but I’m contracting ships to people! 😀

I’ll try to post more often with whatever the hell I’m getting up to in the game. 🙂

I liked the history pieces a lot, because I am only playing for roughly one year, but I am really interested in the stories of eve, both RP and actual stories (like the great war and all those things). Maybe some more of the second, like a post on stuff that has been nerfed / removed (Nano ships for example, I have heard a lot about them being broken, but never why exactly).

Other than history, maybe something about the technical side of eve. For example: Mods. WoW (ewww…) allows the players to install UI mods. Why can’t we do that in eve? And if we could: What kind of mod would be cool / useful. Just give a bit of your own opinion on that, and watch the discussion in the comments.

History, stories and technical stuffs. I can roll with that. Thanks for the input!

    Let’s see…
Firstly, I would love to see some more of your Eve-related artwork. As a fan-artist, myself (although not with Eve) I love seeing the artwork of others, and I’m fascinated with seeing more than the cookie-cutter character-images used around most Eve-sites due to the restrictive quality of character generation. In addition, I’d be curious about your takes on possible Minmatar tattoos and their meanings. The whole idea of Minmatar cultural tattooing interests me.

In addition, I’d love to see more screenshots. Sites of Eve, light shows, battles, unusual happenings… just interesting things to expand the world of Eve that I might not normally get to see.

In addition, maybe you could write up a guide or introduction to role-play in Eve, for those of us who haven’t been involved in it. In general, I’ve done a lot of role-playing elsewhere, but I’ve never quite figured out how it translates over into Eve. It would be interesting for me to read some suggestions or guides on how to get involved. Where to find RP channels, how to hook up with other in-game RPers, where to start if you’re looking to get involved in storylines, must-read things for a newbie RPer in Eve.

Hope you find these suggestions helpful!

Well, the background art for this blog (the characters at least) are not my work, but a commission I had done. I have another in the works for release by Xmas time. However, I do a have a short-lived and quirky comic that I keep meaning to create a sub-template for and then upload here, so I think something can be arranged. Screenshots can also be done. I already uploaded hundreds of them to Flickr, but something a bit more personal would be good I’m guessing.

RP guide is something I can give a shot. Its been a long time since I was heavily involved in Eve RP. The corp I hang out in with this character is an RP organisation, but I don’t really get involved with that side of things very often. That said, I can certainly point some peeps in the right direction!

Thanks for the ideas. Your ship is up on contract. 🙂

Yes, need moar stuff and things please.

I love the backdrop, the mythos, the quite frankly awesome pics and videos, official and unofficial, and of course not forgetting the reassuring boom of heavy artillery, or attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion and C-Beams glittering in the dark near the Tannhauser Gate…

I particularly have a thing for all things Minmatar; the history, the politics, the tattoos and the rusting bucket-of bolts with a ton-of-guns ship designs, the official back story with the Amarr, and the player driven plots that play out from it to this day. As someone who has been around a bit (so to speak) you have an interesting perspective – oh, and I also have a thing for red-heads, leather and buckles…

So, history would be high up there, which ties into politics, past and present. Your favourite ships (particularly Minmatar) and how you fit them for the tasks that float your boat – missioning, scanning (I was thinking of training up to explore, erm, exploring – should I use the newbie probe or look for something a bit more exciting?), escalations, faction warfare. To the more mundane “stuff and things” of your day-to-day piloting – you have a thing for industry right?

Liberally sprinkled with purdy pictures if you please – I run a couple or more missions a week and have hardly ventured outside Heimatar. Living vicariously, as another poster mentioned, through you would be an interesting insight into the deep dark beyond.

P.S. post moar often too. ;p

    • 21st Oct '10 at 10:47 am

Mm, I miss the booms of artillery. These days I live on autocannons, which makes a little bit of me die inside. 🙁

Moar history can certainly be arranged, and a lot of people have been requesting my own slant on guide writing, so I think that’s probably going to be in the works as well.

Fittings can be arranged. If only for the amusement of others when I post something hilariously bad. I don’t often lose ships, so they can’t be that god-awful, but I’ve had some funny looks in the past because of certain things I’ve strapped on there.

I do have a ‘thing’ for industry, its true. An industry guide scares me though. It would probably read more like a flight sim manual (i.e. doorstop sized wedge of paper), but I’ll have a think on it.

Thanks for your input. Your ship is now on contract! 🙂

As a new player i would like to see more posts about the history of eve both the lore and major player event such as the downfall of BoB and things like that. This is because major events like that still affect the game today and its hard to find accounts of events so long ago. Well that and I like reading about things like that. It would also be nice to have a current events post that can keep me up to date since it is hard to experience first hand politics while you are stuck in high sec. It would also be more interesting if you did it with a bit of role play instead of the typically drab format of such things and make it easier and more enjoyable to read for us. Also if you have any guides or advice on more obscure parts of the system that would not normally be stumbled upon yet are still very important yet often neglected.

    IGN: Jimqi101
it would be nice if you could send me a mail about how to accept a contract since I really am that new =p.

    • 21st Oct '10 at 10:53 am

History and lore are my forte. There’s a whole bunch of things I can’t effectively cover, since I wasn’t there, or involved at all. I can of course research events and write about them, but without my own personal experience of the event, it would be a very dry read. That’s not to say that I’ll be stopping writing history though!

Guides to obscure things, hmm… Hints and tips perhaps?

I’ll contract you and send to a mail. 🙂

I really enjoy the Eve history aspects – and by Eve history, I don’t mean PF, I mean all the dozens – hundreds – of stories that have never been recorded anywhere but are such a big part of the background that makes Eve what it is. Sure, everyone’s heard of the GHSC heist, but what about ‘once upon a time, back in the day when the only way to get T2 production components was mission running and Caladri ships had a railgun bonus, there was this corporation called …’

That history is now largely held only in the memories of players and on some now-defunct websites. Some of it is RP history, some of it is 0.0 history, but all of it is fascinating (or I think so, anyway) and unlike guides and PF, it isn’t covered anywhere else on the interwebs.

So maybe you could tell some stories, about how you ended up the heroine of an Interstellar Intrigue novel for example, or interview some other long term players who remember when mining in a bantam with a T1 laser was the height of production efficiency. Tell us where the game has been, who the players are who shook empires in their day even if they’ve moved on now, about the most expensive interceptors ever fitted and the reason you have to wait three minutes between jettisoning things in your hold. Tell us about it! –

I would really love to see more mission guides.

Its sometimes hard to find a good, detailed mission guide for many missions (other than the obvious’ in this mission you will kill stuff. there are such and such battleships and so many cruisers’) I require MOAR DETAILZ regarding what ship you used to run the mission, what kind of bounties you racked up (if there are bounties in this misison) if there was any shiny dropped and so on.

That being said, as a new player and a blatant historophile, more history posts would also basically rock my world.

More history posts and art and mission reports, please.

    (Arcana Mortis)

    • 21st Oct '10 at 10:59 am

MOAR detailz! Yup, that can be done. Striking a balance between details and fun-to-read will be a challenge, especially for mission guides, but we’ll see. 🙂

What I would like to see is Amarr fitting guide. As a minmatar I’m not sure whether you fly amarr or not. I would like to hear the basis of why the module was chosen and what the pro and cons of it. I alway read 2nd anomaly from the left blog and eve fail blog and both presented a good argument on how to fit a ship. After reading that kind of guide make me want to go undock and fly the ship that they mention! I want to see more history and background of the ship being featured, how they were first fitted and how the fit evolve over time as eve game mechanic changed.

    • 27th Oct '10 at 3:51 pm

I don’t really fly Amarr ships, no. You don’t want to actually *use* my ship fittings anyway. Not unless you want to demonstrate how not to fit a ship, or point and laugh at them! 😀

Ship history I might be able to manage. I have some stuff about the Imperial Apocalypse in my head that I want to write up. 🙂

  16. 28th Oct '10 at 1:07 pm

Honestly? Write what you love to write about – at the end of the day blogs are more interesting to read if they are updated regularly and written by someone who enjoyed writing it. It shouldn’t be a “service” aka written for a purpose – it should be read by people who just happen to like what you enjoy writing about. If you like writing guides, write more guides. If you like writing in-char stuff, write more of that, etc etc!

    – Eelis

Thanks. 🙂 I’ve given that same advice to others before, so I understand completely what you’re getting at. I was mostly fishing for ideas that get me all excited.

Is it just Eelis? There’s quite a few of those, and no Eeliskiy. Let me know and I’ll contract you a ship. 🙂

I’m new to eve and learn a lot by reading blogs. Here are some topics I think new players would like to see.

    1. Many people blog about roams and killmails but rarely talk about losses. If they do they just say “I got popped” and move on. I’d like to see a topic called Lesson Learned where failed roams, skill training mistakes, fleet screwups, anything where you learned a lesson or how to do something better past or present.

    2. Campfire stories. As new players we often here the phrase “back during such and such expansion things were different”. We want to hear those stories. We want to hear about epic fleet battles, Corp drama, what eve was like back then.

    3. Hot seat. An interview section where someone talks about their experiences. Could be someone in your Corp, someone in game you guys meet maybe even a dev if the idea takes off.

Thanks for your time. I really enjoy your blog.

    Eve name: Kohrien

I don’t really lose ships, believe it or not. At least not for a couple of years now. And those are so far back I can hardly remember what happened. 😮 If I do though, I’ll be sure to say why I lost it. 😉

Campfire stories are my speciality then, I would guess! 😀

Interviews I can also do. I’d like to do some with other oldskool players; try to get a different perspective on things I’ve been through, and all the things I wasn’t actually present for.

Thanks for the input. Your ship will be on contract in a few minutes. 🙂

I would love to see more of the stories I love the way you tell them.

I don’t have you much down as a roamer but those are also a good read at times (even though I am a pve care-bear myself :P)

Also love alot of the old screenies as its really nice to see how the interface has changed from what I now as now if that made sense actually rather on a scatter brain today xD

    anyway hope that’s some use

Thanks for the input. A lot of the interface hasn’t changed at all, but the introduction of the overview and the HUD has evolved a lot over the years, just very slowly, hehe.

Nout wrong with carebears. They keep the piratey types in business (in more ways than one). 🙂
